Reprise – The Illusion of Control

By Pascal Dennis

It's seductive, no?

People will do my bidding. I can manage from a distance. I don't have to get my hands dirty.

And perhaps the most hidden, "Damn you Jack, I'm all right!"

Maybe it's the residue of childhood, when everything went our way & people did our bidding.

But I've known too many CEO's, CFO's, CIO's, CMO's, SVP's and the like who try to live this dream.

Any why not? They are handsomely rewarded for doing so.

Who suffers?

Our children & grandchildren, who'll have to pick up the pieces, pay the unpaid bills, and nurse the crippled society.

There comes a time in every person's life, and every organizations, when they must choose between "Yes!" and "No."

I believe we're in such a time.

We'll renew ourselves, or continue to decay and secede the field to China & other tough competitors.

Wise generals recognize the illusion of control is just that. Wise generals eat what the troops eat.

They seek to cultivate initiative at all levels. By giving up the illusion of control, they gain some measure of it.

Like a good surfer, they know the waves, know the board and know their capabilities.

They have a good chance at a great ride, and one that brings admiration and respect.

Best regards,

Pascal
